I, Wendy Schauer, am a shoe addict.   Here is my shoe story.

I was a normal shoe buyer until I started working out with ketttlebells.  Working out with kettlebells requires that you wear flat soled shoes so you can be more stable on the ground.  Since I only had one pair of athletic shoes that weren’t kettlebell authorized, I had to go buy new shoes.  Converse shoes fit the bill.  Soon I became addicted and I had to have every color of Converse that I could get my hands on.  Red, blue, black, pink, green, teal, orange, brown, combo colors…. Whatever the color of  my workout clothes were I had shoes to match.  I loved, loved, loved my Converse.  Then I fell in love with the barefoot shoes and my converse ended up in the spare closet.

Now I can’t get enough of the barefoot shoes.  My favorite is the New Balance Minimus.  Love, love, love them.  I have the Vibram Fivefingers (don’t knock them until you try them) and the fabulous pink and black Saucony.  The first place I go to in a department store is the shoes department. 

Kettlebell Shoes

Funny thing is since I have been wearing the barefoot shoes my feet are stronger and happier.  I am on my feet all day long and several years ago I started getting pain in my feet at the end of the day.  In the past, as long as I rotated my shoes every other day my feet and legs were ok.  But that changed and my feet started getting painful at the end of the day.  I bought new shoes, tried inserts and nothing was changing.  The pain was minimal but I knew if something didn’t change it would become worse.  Enter the barefoot shoes.  I only wear them when I exericse – walk or kettlebells but they have strengthened my feet so that they don’t hurt any more even after a 10 hour day.

I work with a medical doctor who wears the Vibram Fivefingers while she is working.  She experienced the same thing, stronger feet with less pain.  By making our feet work like they are supposed to they get stronger.  Most athletic shoes are like strapping mattresses to our feet causing us to lose balance and proprioception.  The barefoot shoe increases stability and strength of the small intrinsic muscles of the feet. 

I realize these shoes aren’t for everyone but if you want to try the New Balance Minimus is a great shoe to start with.

I’ve been thinking about buying the Vibram FiveFingers myself, for running and otherwise. I’ve heard that walking barefoot and with minimalist shoes helps walking and running gait, to help bring it back to the natural pace and step. How can this help with daily life?

I need to buy some barefoot shoes! Thanks for giving me a quick run down on the options. It makes sense to me that barefoot shoes would strengthen my feet the way nature intended. I have heard they are good for people who stand all day for work. The New Balance Minimus look really super cute, but I also want to try the Vibrams. Decisions..:)

I need to try those barefoot shoes, as opposed to the ones I usually wear…none. I have heard it is not really healthy to go barefoot all the time, but I don’t know if that is true…my feet seem happy.

I haven’t tried the barefoot shoes yet. But I am often harping on my clients to make sure they have supportive but flexible footwear.

The right shoes really do make a huge difference.

Never heard of these before. I do wear leather moccasins when I’m hiking [ better feel of the ground, the trail.]

I’ve always heard how beneficial it is to walk bare-footed, however, this is not something to do while working. I’m wondering if I can get away with wearing barefoot shoes … I’ve gotta try them!

I am totally going to tell my mom about this. She has been experiencing a couple of years of pain and has been trying every different type of shoe…

The shoe world has her FOCUSED on all the different types of arch support. and “sure” it helps temporarily because you have on a new type of shoe… but it often leads her back to more pain.

This has got to be the ticket!
