My Top 5 Books On Health and Fitness

by Dr. Wendy Schauer, D.C., R.K.C. on April 17, 2012

I read a lot.  I love to read about health, self development and exercise and I have over 700 books.  I can’t remember the last time I read a fictional book.  It isn’t that I don’t like fiction, it’s just that I can’t seem to get past the health, nutrition, exercise and self help section.  Every book I read gives me information to help myself or my patients.  These books help me be a better chiropractor and health practioner.

It was extremely hard to pick out five as there were so many that were great.  These are the ones that help me on a regular basis, in no particular order.

1.  The Paleo Solution by Robb Wolf.    There are many Paleo books (diet of lean meat, vegetables, fruits, nuts/seeds) out there but this one is my favorite.   Robb Wolf does a great job of explaining why grains can cause problems and how to be healthier eating a Paleo Diet.  I recommend a no grain diet to my chronic pain patients.  I have had patients almost disabled from wheat that became almost pain free by getting it out of their diet.

2.  Your Body’s Many Cries For Water by F. Batmanghelidg, M.D.    I have had patients cut their pain in half just by drinking water.  It is such a simple solution that I make sure all of my patients know the importance of water.

3.  Enter The Kettlebell by Pavel Tsatsouline.  Pavel was the man who introduced and popularized the Kettlebell in the United States.  I credit him for helping me get rid of my back pain and getting me strong and stable.  In this book, Pavel demonstrates the basics of the kettlebell.

4.  The Blood Sugar Solution by Mark Hyman, M.D..  Many of us think that as long as we haven’t been diagnosed with diabetes we must be ok.  Dr. Hyman says that isn’t true and he coined the term “Diabesity”.  In his book he explains how blood sugar issues (even before diabetes) are causing major health problems.  He is a functional medicine doctor who doesn’t just treat symptoms.  He looks for the underlying causes and rebalances the body so it can heal.

5.  Spent – End Exhaustion and Feel Great Again by Frank Lipman, M.D.  This book is a self help book that gives you daily exercises or suggestions to help regain your energy and vitality.  Simple things like Day 32 – Strengthen Your Core, Day 17 – Hang Out With Friends and Day 30 – Take Omega 3 Fish Oils.

Happy Reading!

I, too, LOVE books and reading. Since health is one of my favorite topics as well, I will definitely check these out. I’m a big fan of the Paleo diet, and I love Dr. Mark Hyman, so I’ll probably try those two first. 🙂

Thanks for recommending these great books. I also like that your descriptions are brief yet informative, and you say WHY the books are your favourites.

Great recommendations – The Bodies Many Cries for Water got me hooked on Alkaline water about 15 years ago.

I love the books listed.

I too have cut wheat and grains out of my diet, except on rare occasions.

the body is thirsty! Many think it is hungry and miss the ques from their owen body.

Water is so huge! We have so many strong flavors around us these days that it seems sometimes water doesn’t even taste good depending upon your health and diet choices. Because if your mouth tastes bad,.,, water won’t help that.

But yeah. Water for sure. The fiurther down the unhealthy road you go… the less you seem to even want it… I know this from experience!

Blood sugar. I mostly eat vegetables and meat. Some fruit. In a rather healthy way compared tyo what you might think from that staement. So I don’t get much sugar from the processed sources.

However I love things sweet.
For this I purchase the liquid form of stevia. Not in Alchohol! but the one in a base of glycerine.

And I use it for coffee, tea and sparkling water such as La Croix.

Today If UI use sugar instead of stevia… Something seems off.

LOL

Great post Great Books I have actually read the first tweo!

“Enter The Kettlebell”, one of my favorites. Pavel has a great sense of humor. His tapes are great; especially when he talks about making the workout more “eviiiillllll”.

Thanks

Hi Dr. Wendy,

As a fellow bibliovore book lover, I relate to having to choose only 5 of your favorite books on a topic. You selections sound wonderful.

I got to do Kettlebells with Steve Maxwell a few times back when I lived in San Francisco and the Silicon Valley Peninsula.

I’m a book addict too so I enjoyed your list and was happy to see a few names I’m familiar with. I enjoy Pavel’s work and count myself lucky to have trained with him in the late 90’s before he became better known. Also a big fan of Dr. Hyman’s work too.

Thanks!
